What flood vents are actually for

A foundation wall is designed to resist soil pressure from one side. Standing floodwater outside an enclosure with dry air inside produces a pressure difference the wall was never designed for, and unequalised hydrostatic loading is what collapses foundations in a flood — not the current.

Engineered flood openings let water in deliberately so the pressure equalises. The enclosure floods, and the structure survives. That trade is the whole design intent, and it is why covering flood vents to keep a crawl space dry is a dangerous thing to do on this coast.

NFIP requirements and the numbers that matter

Under NFIP rules, a non-engineered opening must provide at least one square inch of net open area per square foot of enclosed area, with a minimum of two openings on different walls, and the bottom of each opening no more than one foot above adjacent grade.

Engineered flood vents certified by ICC-ES carry a rated coverage per unit that is typically far greater than the one-square-inch-per-square-foot calculation, which usually means fewer units. The certification is what lets the rated figure be used rather than the geometric one.

Can I encapsulate a crawl space that needs flood vents?

Do flood vents let cold air and animals in?
