The basin should be sealed, not open

An open sump pit in a sealed crawl space defeats part of the point of sealing it. The pit is a direct opening to the soil, and moisture and soil gas move through it freely. A sealed basin with a gasketed lid and a grommeted pipe penetration keeps the space closed while still collecting water.

The lid also has to be removable. A basin sealed permanently under a liner cannot be serviced, and the pump inside it is a mechanical part with a finite life.

Sizing, check valves and the backflow problem

A pump is chosen against the volume the site produces and the vertical lift to the discharge point, not against a generic rating. Undersized pumps run constantly during storms; oversized ones short-cycle and wear their switches out.

The check valve is the small part that matters most. Without it, the column of water standing in the discharge line runs back into the basin every time the pump stops, so the pump immediately restarts and moves the same water again. That cycle destroys pumps.

What happens in a power cut

In coastal North Carolina the heaviest rain and the power outages arrive together. A sump pump with no backup is offline for exactly the event it exists to handle. A battery backup unit or a water-powered secondary is worth considering on any property where water arrival is regular rather than occasional.

How much does a crawl space sump pump cost installed?
Typically $900–$2,000 for basin, pump, check valve, discharge and electrical, assuming a perimeter drain already feeds it. Installed as part of a full drainage system it is included in that scope.
Does a sump pump need its own circuit?
It should have one. Sharing a circuit means a tripped breaker elsewhere takes the pump offline, and you will not know until water appears.
Why does my sump pump run constantly?
Usually a missing or failed check valve — the discharged water runs straight back into the basin and gets pumped again. The other common cause is an undersized pump during heavy water arrival.
Where should the discharge go?
Well away from the foundation, to a point at lower elevation that can absorb it. Never to a splash block at the wall, and never into a sanitary sewer.
